The Battle of Long Tan - by Tilly Schammer
Between the rubber plants,
18 Australians rest.
18 young men, none older than 23.
These men fought in a battle.
For their country, for their people.
Just a routine check, soon a danger zone.
They stood outnumbered five to one.
No-where to hide between the rows of trees.
Shot at from every angle, no reinforcement coming.
Boxes fell from the sky, full of ammunition much needed.
We visited the memorial, out in the field.
And although we cry and show respect, 18 young men still stay at that place.
Forever at rest.
18 lives cut too short in the war.
Lest we forget.
